Abstract

ithium-sulfur (Li/S) batteries have attracted remarkable attention in recent years due to their potentially higher capacity and specific energy compared to existing lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the electrochemical reaction of Li/S batteries are still poorly understood, mainly due to the high sensitivity of the intermediate and final products to moisture. Therefore, in situ and operando experiments are highly required to elucidate the reaction mechanism under real operating conditions. In this talk, I will mainly talk about the in-situ/operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy study of (1) the charging mechanism of nanosized Li2S electrode; (2) the formation process of the solid electrolyte interphase on the lithium anode; and (3) the electrostatic confinement of intermediate polysulfides by function binder. These experimental results demonstrate that in-situ/operando XAS characterization techniques can help researchers well understand the real reaction mechanism of Li/S batteries under real operation conditions.

Dr. Liang Zhang received his Ph.D. degree from NSRL of USTC under the supervision of Prof. Junfa Zhu in 2013. He now works at the Advanced Light Source of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as a Postdoc. His current research is mainly focused on in-situ/operando XAS for energy related materials. He has published more than 40 papers in the journals of Science, Nature Catalysis, Nano Lett., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Adv. Energy Mater., etc. He is the recipient of Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, National scholarship, and Chinese Academic Society Presidential Scholarship.
