Janos Kirz is SUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Stony Brook University, where he served as Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy between 1998 and 2001. He is currently Scientific Advisor at the Advanced Light Source in Berkeley, where he served as Acting Director between 2004 and 2006.
Prof. Kirz's research interests include soft x-ray microscopy and diffraction based imaging of biological specimens. He collaborated with Prof. Chris Jacobsen, using beamline 9.0.1 at the Advanced Light Source. He has developed a scanning transmission x-ray microscope using zone plate focusing. The resolution is intermediate between that of light and electron microscopes. The specimen may be wet, and up to 10 microns thick. Using absorption spectroscopy, information about the microchemical environment may be obtained. On diffraction based imaging Prof. Jacobsen and Prof. Kirz collaborated with Dr. David Sayre, originator of the idea. The experimental program started at the National Synchrotron Light Source, and is at the Advanced Light Source in Berkeley since the fall of 2003.
